Description

Circumferential (Transverse) MFL Probes – Advantages & Applications

Circumferential MFL (C-MFL, also known as transverse MFL) probes generate magnetic flux along the pipe circumference. They complement conventional axial MFL and target axially oriented defects which axial MFL often fails to detect reliably.

Key Advantages

  1. High sensitivity to axial narrow defects Axial MFL is insensitive to long axial cracks parallel to its magnetic field. C-MFL applies circumferential magnetization; flux lines intersect axial cracks perpendicularly, delivering much higher detection capability for these critical threats.
  2. Reliable identification of longitudinal seam weld anomalies, groove corrosion and axial mechanical gouges It catches longitudinal weld cracks, incomplete fusion, axial grooving corrosion and long scratch damage, which are high-risk failure modes for pipelines.
  3. Inspection through intact coating, high throughput, integrable into inline inspection (ILI) tools No couplant required. It works over sound coating. High-density C-MFL sensor arrays can be integrated together with ultra-high-resolution axial MFL probes, completing data capture in a single pig run, as adopted by NDT Global QUADRA.
  4. Differentiation of internal / external metal loss and defect sizing High-resolution sensor arrays support discrimination between ID and OD axial indications, plus depth & length quantification for RBI integrity assessment.
  5. Compatible with data-driven inspection workflows Digital signal output and C-scan mapping enable data fusion with axial MFL results, producing omnidirectional defect maps for digital pipeline integrity management.

Limitation: C-MFL performs poorly on circumferential cracks and isolated pitting corrosion. It works best as a combined solution with axial MFL instead of standalone use.

Main Applications

  1. Oil & gas pipeline inline inspection (primary use) Crude oil, natural gas and product pipelines. For longitudinal seam weld cracks, axial grooving corrosion, fatigue cracks and mechanical scratches. Combined axial + C-MFL has become the mainstream configuration for modern ILI pigs.
  2. On-line mill inspection for steel pipes Welded and seamless pipe production lines, detecting longitudinal rolling cracks, laps and inclusions.
  3. Longitudinal weld inspection on storage tanks & pressure vessels Manual array C-MFL scanning for shell longitudinal welds of ASTs, boiler drums and process piping.
  4. Re-inspection of subsea risers & flowlines Legacy lines with known axial cracking or third-party mechanical damage.
  5. Fatigue crack screening for steel structures & lifting equipment Longitudinal fatigue cracks on steel beams and lifting components.
